Nyarongi Community Rural Reading Room
Nyarongi · Ndhiwa Sub-county · Homa Bay County, Kenya

Learning shouldn't stop when the term does.

The Nyarongi Community Rural Reading Room is being built by the people of Nyarongi — not for them — as a permanent home for reading, numeracy, STEM, and mentorship, open all year round.

Nyarongi Church — host of our Community Maths Camp, August 2026

~150 days

a year, Nyarongi's children are out of school — with nowhere nearby to keep reading, practising maths, or learning something new.

What Nyarongi has already built

This isn't a proposal starting from nothing. For four consecutive years, the Nyarongi Community Maths Camp has brought local teachers, university volunteers, and partner organisations together each school holiday — proof that the demand, and the community willing to meet it, are already here.

4
consecutive years running the Maths Camp
107
learners reached in the 2026 camp alone
23
local and partner volunteers in 2026

What the Reading Room will offer

One space, used differently by everyone who walks in — from early childhood through senior secondary, and by the teachers and parents around them.

Reading & literacy
A stocked, welcoming space for children to read independently or in guided reading clubs.
Numeracy & STEM
Hands-on maths and science activities building on four years of Maths Camp practice.
Mentorship
Support for young people who've finished Form 4 and are figuring out what comes next.
Homework & study support
A quiet, resourced place to study — something most families here can't provide at home.
Digital literacy
Structured introduction to digital tools and skills for learners and young people.
Teacher & community learning
A shared space for local teachers' professional learning, not just a facility for children.

Nyarongi Maths Camp Over the Years

Owned by Nyarongi, not by us

STEMpathy Hub Africa helps coordinate training, partnerships, and resources. It does not own or run the Reading Room. That responsibility sits with a locally elected Leadership Committee — parents, teachers, young people, women, local leaders, and community institutions — accountable to Nyarongi, not to any one organisation.

“It takes a village to raise a child.” We're building the room that village needs.

Help us build it

Right now

We're running reading-club sessions at the church that has hosted our Maths Camp for four years, using a starter book collection, while the permanent Reading Room proposal is with Just Be A Child (JBAC).

Donate, volunteer, or partner with us — every contribution moves Nyarongi closer to a permanent space.
